In an effort to incorporate sustainable principles in my building I began to do some research on the available and innovative technologies that are around. The first of these I came across, and the most appropriate to integrate into my building was the Shower Tower, first seen in Melbourne's CH2. The Shower Tower is able to passively cool air to 21 degrees and water to 15 degrees by the process shown in the diagram below. The shower towers will be attached to the walls of my building, and create an intriguing aesthetic quality. This cooled air will be circulated throughout the building, reducing the need for air conditioning, while the water will be pumped through pipes within the building's floor and ceiling to assist in cooling the air. This, along with the thermal mass attributed to and underground project will assist in minimising the building's ongoing carbon footprint.
The Battery
In order to provide electricity for my building, it is proposed that the on-site carpark shall incorporate new technologies to generate sufficient power. The carpark will be a discreet 3 story structure, hidden from public view by the current banking which is in place around the site, along with heavy planting of mature trees (again, already in place). The carpark will include piezoelectric speed-bumps, generating power from the compression caused when a car drives over them, along with external panelling from Alcubond which acts as an efficient solar panel while looking the same as any other aluminium panel. Any glass in the carpark will be fitted with a film which also acts as a solar panel, capturing energy from light and transmitting it to the frame for storage. The carpark will also incorporate traditional water collection for use in the Shower Tower.
